The integrated community development project called the Child Aid Mumena project was implemented from 2013 to 2021. It aimed at empowering individuals, families and communities to become drivers of their own development agenda.
The project worked with 1,450 families organized in 60 Village Action Groups and followed the ten lines of the Child Aid Programme. Results within these 10 lines included:
Improved income and food security: Families were empowered to diversify income sources i.e. through including/ improving village chicken rearing, and increase producton of legumes. Trainings and support of savings groups further strengthened household economic resilience.
Improved health: Access to health, safe drinking water and sanitation was enhanced by improving water systems and infrastructure in health facilities and schools. The construction of a maternity wing reduced home child delivery, while an incinerator built ensured safe waste disposal.
Early Childhood Care and Education: Interventions which included improved school infrastructure and established playgrounds resulted in a solid academic and social foundation for children.
Youth Activities: The project empowered out-of-school youths with trainings and economic empowerment ventures including poultry rearing, vegetable growing and school clubs as interactive spaces for health.
Education: Behavioural change was attained in schools in terms of improved wash practices, menstrual hygiene, reduced risk to HIV/ pregnancy, change towards negative cultural practices.
In Environment, effects of climate change were mitgated through lessons in improved farming methods, tree planting, and firewood saving stoves.
