Memory Zulu, aged 25, from the Kafushi area of Chibombo district, has been a member of the Mwachimani Young Farmers’ Club since 2021.
"I joined the Young Farmers' Club when I moved to Chibombo from Ndola. At first, we were given Okra seeds by DAPP as a club which we planted in our garden. We have been taught about climate-smart agriculture, including conservation farming, planting different crops and using organic fertilisers. After selling our harvest, each member earned a K700. With my money, I bought a goat and invested the rest into my salon business. My goat gave birth to three kids within a single year, and now I have four goats. Diversifying our agricultural production to include small livestock has really helped us cushion the impact of crop failure in cases of prolonged droughts," explained Memory.
The DAPP Young Farmers' Clubs project, which started in 2016, ignites passion among young people in Chibombo and Kalumbila districts to engage in profitable, climate-smart agriculture to improve their livelihoods and create jobs.
The project works with over 750 youths in 30 Farmers' Clubs where they share experiences and knowledge in improved, diversified agricultural production and savings to improve access to credit.
